Superfoods for Healthy Eyes

Superfoods for Healthy Eyes

Mummy says… I have had a few problems with my eyes this year. I have been short sighted since I was 11, and apart from that my eyes are usually pretty healthy. At the beginning of the year though, my eyes were under attack from a virus and it was a bit scary if I am honest. I have been looking at ways to help the health of my eyes, and want to share what I have found with you.

Superfoods for Healthy Eyes

My eyes are one of the most precious part of my body. I struggle with short sightedness but my recent virus made me really appreciate my eyes more than ever – and be thankful of the care available in this country such as eye tests, contact lens care etc. I used to hate wearing glasses. I was so very self conscious as a tween and teen, glasses back then were NOT cool. They were awful.

Since my eye virus, I have really realised that it is SO not a big deal to wear glasses.  It has taken me 30 years to reach this point.

I wouldn’t wear my glasses outside of my home, I wore my contact lenses as long as I could every day. I hated anyone seeing me in my glasses. But now, because I was told my eyes were being compromised by the virus, which was attacking the front of my eyes, I was told (not advised), told NOT to wear my lenses.

For me, this was a huge deal. But I knew I had to listen.

I decided to treat myself to some lovely new glasses that I would be happy to be seen in.

I am very recently trying some new daily disposable contact lenses, but I am only wearing them for very limited periods. It is now safe for me to wear them but no where as much as I was.

I use Thealoz Trehalose 3% eye drops which help hydrate my really dry eyes and they are suitable for contact lens wearers too.

I have looked at superfoods for healthy eyes and realised my diet can actually have an impact on my eyes.

The top superfoods for healthy eyes are:

Kale, cress, spinach, peas, squash, green lettuce, Brussel sprouts, asparagus and carrots – yes carrots!

They all contain lutein and zeaxanthin which has been proved to actually help reduce the chances of you suffering from age-related macular degeneration – AMD.

These foods have so many benefits for all round health too, so I am really trying to get us all eating more of them.

Did you know that these foods can help keep your eyes healthy?

  1. Thanks for sharing this, I love all superfood hacks 🙂
You know, there is nothing wrong with wearing glasses, even Harry Potter wears, and he is a popular young man!

  2. I agree eye health is so important! My son is registered blind as he had cone dystrophy and nystagmus.
I have had an issue with glasses too, but got over it but it was difficult. I am trying lenses again for the first time in years, but they are different strengths and this is difficult to adjust to.

btw: our cats have had eye viruses this year too!

  3. I’m glad to hear your eye virus has cleared up and your feeling better, I couldn’t imagine not having my sight, we really do take things for granted, I didn’t realise you can eat super foods to help with your eyes xxxx

  4. I’ve ONLY just started wearing glasses for reading
So important to PROTECT to prevent harm
I love your recommendations – They are part of my daily diet -thats probably why I got away for so LONG without needing specs

  5. Eye sight is probably the most precious of the senses. So it’s key we try to keep them healthy. I’m a strong believer in healthy diet and some superfoods that are good for us. Thanks for the tips!
