You have, it has been officially announced, left One Direction. In the middle of a World Tour. Before that tour reaches the UK – where your fame and fortune were made, and you become one of the biggest boy bands in the world. Where girls, like my sister, followed you, screamed for you and fell in love with you.
Your fans adored you – worshipped you. I wonder if you know the power and effect you have on girls?
My sister saw you in 2013 with my Mummy, and they both LOVED you! One Direction were, they say, unbelievable live. YOU were amazing. Everyone fell in love with you a little more.
My sister had the chance to see you again this June in Cardiff. She used her Christmas money for the ticket. Mummy is saving for the train and hotel for you. My biggest sis bought her a TShirt at Christmas with your face on, for the concert.
Now, I don’t know what has happened – other than, so it seems, you’ve been caught out and maybe been a bit naughty. Suddenly you fly home, and even more suddenly, you have left the group.
Leaving my sister and hundreds of thousands of girls like her…..where exactly?
Couldn’t you have finished the tour? Honoured the UK dates for the fans that put you where you wanted to be?
My sister was heartbroken broken last night – you see, to a 15 year old, it’s quite a big deal. It’s a BIG deal.
Today, she is angry. Angry with you. ‘Man up!’ she tweets!
She doesn’t want to go to the concert now. But she has too. She’s got the ticket. She’ll have a great time I’m sure, the other four boys will be just as fab without you. But right now, she’s upset and angry.
Her idol, her teen crush, her fave boy in the biggest band in the world has gone. Without, it seems, a thought for his loyal fans.
Oh, and it was announced via a Facebook page. No comment or apology from you.
Of course, it is your life. You have the right to make your own decisions, about what you do. But, being in such a privileged position, I don’t think it is quite that simple.
Yesterday, so many girls had their hearts broken. My sister is one of them. Everyone who has ever had a teen crush on a pop star will understand. No, no-one has died, and yes, there are SO many more important things going on in the world. But in our family, in our home, this has affected us.
I hope you find your relaxation. I hope you find your space to be a normal 22 year old. I hope your stress eases.
But when you do, I’m not sure your adoring fans will be so adoring and ready to support you again.
You’ve crushed so many. I wonder if you even realise?
