Your home and garden may some under attack from any of these, here are some ideas for pest control in the warmer weather:
Ants – one of the most common pests in the UK, you are bound to have these visit you this spring and summer. Keep an eye out to catch infestations of ants as soon as possible. Clear up any spills of sticky food and drink immediately. You could try natural repellant remedies including planting mint or wiping skirting boards etc with peppermint essential oil or sprinkle pepper (black or cayenne), or to kill the ants sprinkle cinnamon where you see them, use cinnamon essential oil or mix a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water and spray it directly onto the ants. Wipe them up with paper towel and dispose of in the bin. You can also spray this solution around your home as a deterrent or mix lemon juice with water in the same way as a deterrent.
Flies – they start to appear when the weather gets warmer, the best way to keep them at bay is to keep your home clean and disinfected, don’t leave any food uncovered, and clear away pet food bowls as soon as your pet has fed. Clear up cat / dog poop immediately as well as flies lay 75-100 eggs a time in poop – uurrgghhhhhhhh. Flies do not like herbs including lavender, mint, lemongrass and basil. Plant some in pots by your front and back doors, and in window planters. You can also make a natural deterrent spray with water, lavender, clove, mint, lemongrass, and basil oils. Spray around your home regularly.
Cockroaches – Keep an eye out and if you sport any, you need to find their home. Natural effective remedies include: an equal mix of sugar and baking soda. Sprinkle where you spot them. The sugar attracts them and the baking soda mixes with their stomach acid, killing them over time. If you are looking to repel the cockroaches then use bay leaves around your home.
Snails and Slugs – They will be back in your garden as the weather warms up a bit. The most effective way to get rid of them is to encourage predators such as toads, frogs, birds, ground-beetles and hedgehogs.
