We visited Bath last month on a glorious summers day, and were very excited to have been invited to Jamie’s Italian Restaurant. Mummy has been once to before to the one in Angel in London, but the rest of us have never been to one.
Jamies’s Italian Restaurant in Bath is set inside a quaint Georgian building at Milsom Place. There are quite a few steps to climb, as the restaurant is set on the upper floors, so we had to leave our pushchair downstairs – which was ok. There are a few tables on the first floor, most are upstairs on the same level as the roof terrace. There are large glass doors which opened right up, giving a lovely airy feel to the place. There are no fans or air conditioning, but it did feel comfortable.
Our table was booked for 12.30pm, and the roof terrace tables that had some shade were already all taken. As it was a boiling hot day we decided to sit inside as it would have been way too hot in the sunshine.
We were shown a table, and a waitress came to us quite quickly. Mummy asked for a soft drink without ice for everyone (except me, I only drink water) and the waitress told us that they were not cold, so would we like ice? Mummy was a little surprised that there were no chilled drinks, but said ok.
To be honest, the waitress was quite rude throughout our meal. She sighed and actually virtually rolled her eyes a couple of times during our ordering of our meals, and was abrupt and not warm to me at all – even though I was my usually smiley, chatty self.
However the food was delicious, we chose from the Lunch Menu and each had two courses for just £10.95 – for either a starter and main, or main and desert. It was brilliant value for money.
The children’s menu was awesome – no chicken nuggets and chips here, just fresh, healthy, yummy dishes with fruit infused water to drink. I could see exactly what the meals looked like with a viewfinder given to me with a colouring sheet and some pencils. I do love to draw, and we were at the restaurant quite a while, so I asked Mummy if there was another colouring sheet. Now, this was just a photocopied sheet of a picture to colour – on plain copier paper – and our waitress said they were short of them and didn’t have another one. Really?? She muttered that she would look downstairs, but she didn’t. Mummy found a note book in her bag for me to colour on. I had secret seven tomato pasta bake – homemade curly pasta baked in Jamie’s organic seven-veg tomato sauce, with a Westcombe Cheddar cheese crust & crunchy, herby breadcrumbs. It was delicious. For desert I had chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, crunchy toffee popcorn & chocolate sauce. My meal was £6.50 including my drink, and my desert was £1.50.
MeeMee had Fritto Misto to start – crispy fried sustainable fish & squid tossed in fennel-spiced flour with garlic & lemon aioli.
Mummy had vegetarian lentil Tagliatelle Bolognese, slow cooked & served with herby breadcrumbs & fresh Parmesan.
My sisters had meat Tagliatelle Bolognese with Jamie’s own classic Bolognese recipe, slow cooked & served with herby breadcrumbs & fresh Parmesan.
Luke had Italian Steak and Fries (there was a £2 supplement to pay for this). Flash-grilled prime beef steak with herby heirloom tomato salsa, rocket, aged Parmesan & spiced fries
Lea and Luke had an Epic Brownie – warm fudgy brownie with vanilla ice cream & caramelised popcorn each.
Mummy had baked white chocolate cheesecake with fresh raspberries and crushed amaretti.
Despite the treatment from the waitress, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience, luckily the food more than made up for it! We all noticed that the waitress was quite friendly with other people, so were a bit flummoxed as to why she was rude to us!
We wanted to move onto the roof terrace for a drink after our meal, as the sun had moved round, but we were actually too scared to ask the waitress! Isn’t that crazy? Maybe she didn’t like children!
If you are looking for a special place for a delicious meal at a brilliant price then we highly recommend Jamie’s Italian in Bath – we just hope you don’t have our waitress – or hope she is a bit happier!
